May is Healthy Vision Month

Warm spring weather is finally upon us, which can only mean one thing—Healthy Vision Month is right around the corner. Originally started by the National Eye Institute and taking place every May, Healthy Vision Month is seen by many as the perfect time to really focus (no pun intended) on your eyes and make your vision health a top priority—if you’re not already doing so.

During this time, the NEI encourages people to take steps to protect their eyes—whether by wearing protective glasses, getting a comprehensive eye exam, learning more about your family history, or (preferably) all of the above. But the choice ultimately matters less than taking a step in the first place. In the end, Healthy Vision Month is about the most important factor of all: encouraging people of all ages to maintain the healthiest possible lifestyle that will benefit their eyes for as long as possible.

Why Healthy Vision Month Matters

Events like Healthy Vision Month matter so much because, in 2015 alone, there were roughly 12 million people in the United States suffering from one or more forms of vision impairment or weakness. Yes, it’s true that our vision naturally gets worse as we age, and conditions like Presbyopia will come for all of us eventually, but this is about taking things one step further. The types of recommendations and best practices people are encouraged to employ during Healthy Vision Month not only protect people against eye strain today, but also make vision problems overall less detrimental to day-to-day life moving forward.

Vision problems are actually a lot more common than you probably realize. In fact, according to the World Health Organization:

  • There are 253 million people worldwide right now who are forced to live every day with some type of vision impairment.
  • About 36 million of these people are blind, and the remaining 217 million have some type of moderate or even severe vision issue.
  • Out of the 36 million people who are blind, a massive 81% are over the age of 50.

The World Health Organization also reports that chronic eye diseases are actually the main cause of vision loss worldwide. But perhaps the most important (and damning) statistic is the following: it is currently estimated that over 80% of all vision impairment can either be prevented or totally cured if people take the right steps as early as they can.

In the end, THIS is why Healthy Vision Month is so important. Our vision tends to be one of those things we take for granted—we just assume we’ll always have it. We put off going to the eye doctor, and by the time we realize we have a problem, it’s usually a lot worse than expected.

Healthy Vision Month is therefore about nothing if not urging people to STOP taking their vision for granted. It’s ultimately just as fragile as the rest of our bodies, and if we don’t make an effort to correct or prevent small problems today, they’re only going to turn into much bigger (and more devastating ones) tomorrow. Collectively, we can all work together to help ensure that doesn’t happen.

Making the Most Out of Healthy Vision Month

According to the National Eye Institute, there are a number of different steps people should take – not only during May, but also during the other 11 months of the year – to help maintain the best vision possible.

  • Get a comprehensive, dilated-eye exam at least once per year. Although technology has certainly come a long way, this is essentially the ONLY way to catch certain types of eye and vision-related diseases early. This is particularly important because a lot of these diseases don’t actually have any obvious or immediate symptoms. Getting the right treatment as soon as possible gives you the best chance at preserving your vision over the long term.
  • Live a healthier lifestyle. Many people don’t realize the things we eat affect more than just our weight—they also affect our vision. Staying within a healthy weight range for your age and height and eating healthy foods like fish and vegetables significantly lower your risk of eye disease across the board.
  • Find out as much about your family history as you can. Another thing a lot of people don’t realize is a lot of our eye health is dictated by heredity. If there is a family history of certain conditions or even major events like blindness, you need to know as soon as possible so you can take steps today to mitigate those issues.
  • Use protective eyewear. The types of adjustable-focus glasses offered by Adlens and other providers don’t just help you avoid eye strain. By giving you complete control over what you’re focusing on (and protecting your eyes from the harmful effects of blue light emitted by many electronic devices), they both help ward off the effects of conditions like Presbyopia and help you enjoy all your favorite hobbies and activities with as few of the potential vision-related downsides as possible.

Since May is also the time when the sun manages to come out from behind the clouds after a long winter, it is also recommended that EVERYONE wear sunglasses as often as possible. Any pair of sunglasses you buy should block at least 99% of UV-A and UV-B radiation for the absolute best results. And if you are (like most) using digital screens often, consider wearing protective blue light blocking reading glasses. Adlens’
