About Adlens

Adlens was founded by philanthropist James Chen, as an eyewear company when he realised many people in China did not have access to glasses. It now forms the commercial arm of a global ambition, to bring vision to all. The company is formed of two parts:

Adlens Instant Eyewear: commercialising the adjustable lens technology in eyewear for reading and prescription glasses. The goal is to deliver auto-focus (prescription) eyewear, delivering clear focus wherever you look.

Adlens Innovations: consulting and licensing the technology in non-eyewear sectors where there is a game-changing effect of an adjustable focus lens. Kick-started in 2017, the unit has already taken contracts from multi-billion-dollar OEMs and is growing fast. The first sectors are Virtual Reality and new-born Augmented Reality markets, where ophthalmic needs are underserved.

Adlens aims to triple its revenue in 2018.

We’ve got some great technology: glasses that can vary their focal length, and we are bringing this to market. With the new contracts in both AR and VR, the team needs to grow to execute.

Job Purpose

We’re looking to expand our design capability with a motivated individual looking for a challenge.  The candidate has the opportunity to join a high-performance R&D team, engaged in designing custom adjustable optics for major global companies.

The Design Engineer will be part of a cross-functional team, responsible for the design, CAD, prototyping and early stage process engineering for the optical elements of 3rd party AR / VR applications. This is a customer facing role and requires excellent communication and presentation skills.

The Design Engineer will be responsible for managing the design process for a number of components and sub-assemblies, from problem analysis to concepting and specification up to prototype release; including production and testing of prototypes and suppporting development of the manufacturing process to full scale production. The role therefore requires close and efficient coordination with the manufacturing team and liaison with third party suppliers of materials, sub-components and equipment.

The product design challenge will require working with a variety of materials, production and finishing techniques, inlcuding plastic moulding, coating, and mechanical assemblies with electronic actuation. Experience of designing precision plastic components, complex mechanisms with electronic actuation and control, and optical components will be a distinct advantage.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Product / Component Concept and Design

  • Problem analysis, ideation, evaluation and appropriate research
  • Concept development through to implementation of inventive design solutions
  • Detail design with proficient knowledge of appropriate manufacturing processes
  • High standard of engineering work, design control, robust design, tolerance stack analysis, design for manufacture, design for assembly, input into DFMEA’s

Design in 3D CAD (primarily Solidworks)

  • Use of skeleton model for common reference geometry
  • Understanding and creation of complex CAD model set-ups 
  • Appreciation of minute factors & general 'sound' modelling principles
  • Ability to work methodically, consistently & transparently (esp. within CAD)
  • Following good practice for drawing and data management systems

Prototype production and testing

  • Work with production team to use existing or set up relationships with material, sub-component, and tooling suppliers
  • Physical prototype production and testing
  • Contribute to design and creation of production fixtures that ensure production tolerances can be achieved
  • Work with suppliers to ensure delivery of quality, cost-effective components and tooling.
  • Test method development and product testing to design specification

  • Manage and take responsibility for sub-contractors’ deliverables

  • Seek new technologies appropriate to the development challenge, and establish the supply chain to fulfill.

Experience

  • Must be an experienced designer / engineer, possessing excellent written and oral communication skills (5+ years)
  • Experience of design and development of software and hardware in small electro-mechanical systems an advantage
  • Working in a high-tech multidisciplinary environments; experience of customer-facing engineering consultancy an advantage
  • Managing suppliers
  • Working in an environment regulated to international standards preferred but not essential.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelors / Masters Degree in a Mechanical Engineering, Product Design or a related subject
